What is ANU Webmail?
ANU Webmail provides advice on accessing and utilizing the ANU email account with related services like webmail mailing lists, micro .ft workplace charge 365 and ondrive storage.
The ANU Email Consolidation Project is over and add staff, student and alumni email accounts using the Microsoft email fee 365 product suite.
ANU Webmail Sign in
You must have an email ID and password to sign in to ANU Webmail:
- First Open this webpage.
- Enter your Email ID.
- And enter your valid password.
- Then, Click on the ‘Sign in’ button.
Important Notice: Use of this system is restricted to authorised users only. Unauthorised access or use is prohibited by law and violators may be prosecuted.
These systems require customers to comply with the relevant principles and rules of the Australian National University. Action on this university can be obtained by Australian National Agents.
Using the system implies that the acceptance of the aforementioned conditions.
ANU Email
Microsoft Office 365 is the ANU email provider. The University has upgraded Office 365 (known as Wave 15) to include a new interface, increased mailbox size to 50gb, optimised Outlook Web Application (OWA) utilising HTML 5, and Cellular OWA software will be available to android and iOS users.

You can access ANU email account from any computer connected to the Internet using the ANU Email website. To log in to user email, use ANU ID and Horus / ISIS password.
How to Access functional mailboxes in ANU Webmail?
For Desktop/ Laptops/ Android
- Step 1
Sign in to Outlook Web App (http://outlook.com/anu.edu.au). - Step 2
Choose Your Name in the top right of the Webmail interface. - Step 3
Select Open Other Mailbox. - Step 4
From the popup window, then enter the title of the functional mailbox which you want to start. - Step 5
Select Open, This will open the mailbox that you have entered.
For iPhone/iPad
- Step 1
Open Google Chrome app. - Step 2
Download Chrome – web browser app by google in the App Store. - Step 3
Once installed sign in to your ANU Email account via outlook.com/anu.edu.au. - Step 4
Select Outlook. - Step 5
Select the three vert points button on the right side of your device’s screen. - Step 6
In the menu select Request Desktop Site, This will take you into the complete Outlook Web Access (OWA) page. - Step 7
Select Your Name at the top right of the Webmail interface. - Step 8
Select Open Other Mailbox. - Step 9
From the popup window, enter the name of the mailbox which you would like to start. - Step 10
Select Open, This will open the mailbox that you have entered.
Note: Accessing a functional account via the above instructions does not allow for optimal viewing.
How Do function ANU Email archiving?
Email Archiving
Staff have a 100GB archive function reachable through the email client Outlook (except Outlook 2011 for Mac) and the full version of the Outlook Web Application.
An archive is a specialized mailbox which looks together with the users’ main mailbox folders in Outlook or Outlook Internet Program. Users may get the archive in the exact same way they get their primary mailboxes. Additionally they could search both their writings and primary mailboxes.
It’s worth noting that you might experience a slow reaction time when using the archive on Outlook as the email contents are not cached locally. This system is the standard or user for the archive function and cannot be changed.
The 100 GB archive function is not available for Outlook 2011 for other mail clients. Users with an archive file and utilizing Outlook 2011 for Mac or other mail clients can access their personal archive by logging on to webmail.
Moving messages to the Email Archive
Users move email items from the Principal mailbox to the archive mailbox by moving items manually or mechanically by using Archive Polices, to reduce the size and enhance the functionality of the primary mailbox.
Users may also import information to the archive file in the following manners:
- Import data in the .pst file using Outlook’s Import and Export wizard.
- Move or delete email messages from .pst files in your archive.
- Move email messages in the main mailbox into the archive.
- Let archive automatically transfer email messages from the principal mailbox, based on the age of the messages.
ANU Webmail for the Outlook for Mac
- Step 1
Launch Outlook on mac. - Step 2
If you have previously used Outlook for Mac. - Step 3
From the Tools menu, select Accounts. - Step 4
Select + button in the bottom left under consideration list and select Trade in the menu. - Step 5
Account-Select Exchange Account. - Step 6
Enter the following information:
– E-mail address: e.g. john.smith@anu.edu.au for staff, u1234567@anu.edu.au for students
– Method: User Name and Password
– User name: e.g. u1234567@anu.edu.au
– Password: your ANU password
– Configure automatically: On (check the box) - Step 7
Select Add Account. - Step 8
When prompted allow the server auto discover-s.outlook.com to configure your account. - Step 9
Check Always use my response for this server. - Step 10
Select Allow.
– When Outlook you have configured: If you want to change the default default account name, such as: Account Description: ANU Mail (or you can add your personal description) - Step 11
Close the Accounts Settings screen.
ANU Webmail for the Outlook for Windows
These instructions are for when you’re logged onto an ANU computer attached to the ANU network.
If there is an Outlook accounts configured it’ll take you automatically to your mailbox.
- Launch Control Panel.
- Select Mail (32-bit).
- If no current email account appears on your computer.
- If there are existing email accounts on your own PC.
– Select E-mail Accounts
– On the Account settings screen – Select New - Select E-mail Account.
- You’ll Be prompted for Automobile Account Setup, enter the following information:
– Your Name: e.g. John Smith.
– E-mail Speech: e.g. john.smith@anu.edu.au for staff, u1234567@anu.edu.au for students
– Password: your ANU password
– Retype Password: your ANU password - Select Next button.
- You will be asked to authenticate your mailbox which you will have to.
- Select Remember Password.
- You may be asked a second time to enter your account details
- Select OK button.
- Select Finish option.
- Your mail account configuration is now complete.
Setup Email Server (IMAP) on Desktop Devices
To configure your desktop computer or device, follow the instructions below based on the Operating system and Email client you’re using.
Incoming
- Server type: IMAP
- Server hostname: outlook.office365.com
- Port: 993
- SSL: SSL/TLS
- Authentication: Normal password
Outgoing
- Server hostname: smtp.office365.com
- Port: 587
- SSL: STARTTLS
- Authentication: Normal password
- Username: Uni-ID@uds.anu.edu.au (e.g. u1234567@anu.edu.au)
ANU Email Filtering and Security
Email filtering
Email sent to ANU addresses is checked for both malicious and undesirable content. Filtering software analyses the content of messages and scores it against a set of rules.
Messages containing viruses or other malware are discarded. Mail with a high likelihood of being spam is quarantined rather than delivered.
Quarantine Service
The quarantine service allows users to:
- Check mails which have been quarantined.
- Release mails which may have been incorrectly flagged.
- Mark addresses or domains as never blocked.
- Mark addresses or domains as always blocked.
- Disable spam filtering entirely due to their account (not recommended).
- Set the daily digest of your blocked messages before notification.
- Arrange to temporarily hold messages for longer than the default of 14 days.
Reporting Spam
- Mail can sometimes be misclassified, incorrectly allowed through or obstructed.
- If you receive mail that is spam and has been incorrectly allowed through, report it by attaching the email to a new email and forwarding to spam@anu.edu.au
- If mail has been incorrectly blocked, release it from quarantine or log a job with the” href=”https://www.anu.edu.au/contact-anu”>Service Desk so that can ensure it does not happen again.
- And if you’re uncertain if an email is valid, please do not hesitate to contact the Service Desk
Note: If emailing the Service Desk please include the suspicious email as an attachment and clearly label the email title as ‘ SUSPECTED SPAM’.
Out-of-Office Messages Info ANU Webmail
If you have notice of when you will be absent from your ANU Email account, or office, please create an out-of-office message.
These measures are designed to help setting up an out-of-office message.
- Step 1
Login to Office 365 via webmail access using the Logging-in to Webmail via outlook.com/owa/anu.edu.au. - Step 2
Also click the gear icon with you on the right corner of your screen. - Step 3
Select Options. - Step 4
Select Organize email. - Step 5
Choose automatic replies. - Step 6
And send automatic replies. - Step 7
Set the period that automatic replies are sent. - Step 8
Enter from the automatic reply message you would like to utilize. - Step 9
Select save.
How to Forwarding ANU emails?
The University recommends that you do not automatically forward your ANU email to outside email services. ANU policies require you to maintain the security of any ANU data which you manage; and to ensure that you don’t breach the confidentiality of others or of the University.
As the University Cannot Be guaranteed that external email and storage services abide with its confidentiality conditions, you shouldn’t store or transmit confidential data, such as student or staff data via these services.
Staff and students should use their ANU email accounts for official University communications. In Case communication is received by the University from ANU staff via a non-ANU email accounts, it is recommended that a reply is delivered to that Individual identifying the risks inherent in this action. A recommended response template can be found on the ERMS.
