What is ECU Webmail?
To access your piratemail account via the web, ECU Webmail is used and this email is used to enter your full email address and passphrase.
Webmail provides access access to all IMAP services on your account, so you can connect to your clients’ email through many devices, such as mobile devices, laptops and desktop email.

How to Manage Spam Email?
Microsoft Exchange Online Protection’s spam filter screens and quarantines suspicious email before it reaches your inbox. Spam is sent to the Outlook Junk folder. Bulk messages (like marketing email and newsletters) are sent to your inbox.
Manage spam through the junk folder
The Junk folder is a feature of Outlook and the Online Web App (OWA). Understood and suspected spam messages have been sent to your Outlook Junk folder. Items in the Junk folder are deleted after 30 days.
Assess your Trash folder
- Sometimes, non-spam email is delivered to Junk.
- Open your Junk folder.
- Right-click a non-spam message and Indicate as Not Junk.
- Click OK to trust this email address.
- Mail from this sender will no more be sent to Junk.
- Non-spam may also be dragged back to your own inbox
Other Junk folder options include
- Block sender.
- Never block sender.
- Mark as Not junk.
- Mark as a phishing email
Open the Junk email options
- Dialog box and check your blocked and safe senders lists.
Manage bulk email
Bulk email, like newsletters or product emails, are still sent to your inbox. If you choose, right click the message to delete or archive or chose a Junk folder option like block sender or never block sender.

An email claims to be from your bank, the IRS, or the ECU IT Department or Help Desk. You may be asked to log in or provide your personal information.
The message looks legitimate, but it’s really a trick to obtain your login credentials and steal confidential data, or fool you into downloading harmful attachments. More than 90 percent of data breaches begin with a phishing attack.
Spear phishing is a targeted attack, often directed at a specific individual or department that appears to be from a trusted source. Criminals may use social engineering tricks such as pretexting, which involves creating a false narrative to gain trust and influence behavior.
They may use psychological manipulation and pressure tactics, such as impersonating a supervisor or high level official while making time-sensitive demands.
For example, a major data breach that impacted all employees at Tidewater Community College happened when an employee in the finance department responded to a data request from an attacker impersonating a college official.
It is a type of computer virus that infects systems and prevents access to critical files and data until you pay a ransom. An increasing number of phishing emails involve ransomware attacks.
The City of Greenville, NC, was the victim of a cyber attack involving ransomware that brought down systems for an extended length of time, with the attackers demanding ransom while holding data hostage. Higher education institutions are main targets for ransomware attacks.
University College London was the victim of a ransomware attack that originated with phishing emails and encrypted network storage, leaving students and staff locked out of their files.
Prevent – Think Before You Click
- Be skeptical: Do not click links or attachments you’re not sure are legitimate. NEVER reveal your passphrase to anyone.
- Verify a sender: Call the business using a phone number from their website, the back of a statement, bill or credit card. DO NOT click the links in the email.
- Be cautious of attachments: Be particularly careful when opening attachments or clicking hyperlinks should you get an email containing a warning banner suggesting that it originated in an outside source.
- Keep your anti-virus software regularly updated:
– Windows Defender (included with Windows 10)
– XProtect included with macOS
– Antivirus software from any reputable vendor
- Update your computer and software: Install the latest patches and updates for your operating system and other software.
If you receive a suspected phishing email, here’s what to do:
- DELETE any email that asks for your personal information.
- Mouse over any links to check the URL.
- Don’t click a link in an email without checking it first.
- Official ITCS email communications always match the display name and email address. Examples:
– The ITCS Notification email address is always “ITCSNOTIFICATIONS@ECU.EDU.”
– Phishing emails mask the true address. Mouse over “IT HELPDESK,” and the address is something like, “firstname.lastname@example.org.”
- If you do provide account information to a malicious site, CHANGE YOUR PASSPHRASE IMMEDIATELY at the Passphrase Maintenance website.
How to Setup ECU Webmail on Mobile Email?
- Step 1
Microsoft Outlook cellular program is the suggested email app for tablets and phones.
- Step 2
All users alter their ECU passphrase each 90 days.
- Step 3
To prevent a locked account, follow this process to change your passphrase.
- Step 1
Set a PIN for the device.
- Step 2
Enter these settings.
– Username: complete email address
– Exchange Server: outlook.office365.com
– Domain: leave blank
Reset Passphrase on ECU Webmail
An ECU passphrase has to be at least eight characters and comprise 3-4 of these classes as outlined in the ECU Passphrase Standard.
Here they are three ways to reset the ECU webmail passphrase that you can use:
Self Service Maintenance Portal
The self-service passphrase maintenance portal allows users to:
- Power off cellular devices or signal from ECU mobile programs like Outlook mobile.
- Log in to the passphrase maintenance portal.
– Enter your Pirate ID and challenge text
– Click Next button
– Answer your security questions
- Click on the Set Passphrase icon and form the new passphrase.
- Click the Main menu button and then the Exit button.
- Instantly update the passphrase for mobile apps or sign in, if prompted.
Important Notice: Changing your passphrase through the self service portal does not update your mobile app logins. A cellular app may attempt to log in with the older passphrase and lock in your accounts. Thus, always update your mobile device apps immediately after a reset.

Email or Fax the IT Help Desk
- Help Desk staff may reset a student, faculty, staff or alumni passphrase only as long as the identity of the requester is confirmed.
- Thereforea user should email or fax the Passphrase Reset Form and a copy of a valid ID (ECU 1 Card, driver’s license, or government-issued ID).
- To guard your private information, please black out all information except your name and image.

Important Note: Please note that requests submitted before noon are completed by 5:00 p.m. the same day. Requests filed after noon are finished by noon the next day.
Data Loss Prevention for Email
To help protect ECU information and avoid the accidental breach of sensitive data, Microsoft’s Exchange Online Protection (EOP) tool includes a Data Loss Prevention (DLP) component.
DLP scans outgoing email for certain “markers.” For example, DLP may flag digits formatted like a social security number or a long string of numbers near a date that could indicate a credit card number.
Since DLP cannot read the message but only filters for certain formatting, you must make the final decision for encryption. No one is reading your email. Encrypted messages are delivered straight to the recipients while unencrypted messages sent outside the ECU network are checked against the sensitivity markers. If the message meets certain criteria, the following happens:
- High Sensitivity: Messages are encrypted and delivered. Senders are reminded of the encryption policy through an email.
- Low Sensitivity: Sensitive messages are delivered unencrypted. Again, senders are reminded of the encryption policy through an email.
Here is what all users sending sensitive information should do:
- Encrypt emails containing sensitive data addressed to non-ECU users by typing [ sendsecure] in the subject line or setting the Confidential tag.
- Make sure that sensitive pdf files have Optical Character Recognition (OCR) applied to make the text searchable. Images cannot be read by the DLP filter.
